Tatarstan is a resource-rich region. Due to its advantageous geographic position, the republic owns an extensive raw materials base and well-developed infrastructure. Due to such concentration of resources, Tatarstan is the biggest transportation junction with high economic activity.

Natural resources are the extensive raw material base for all industries

Oil is the major natural wealth of Tatarstan

The Romashkinsky field is Russia’s second biggest oil field and one of the world’s biggest ones.

  • 1 billion tons of confirmed oil resources
  • 12.5 billion tons of petroleum bitumen
  • 200 oil fields
Gas: nearly 40 м³ per 1 ton of oil
Mineral resources
  • 66 million tons of limestone and dolomite
  • 108 coal deposits
  • 35.3 million m³ of building stone
  • 72 million tons of plaster-stone
  • 169 million m³ of argilla

Besides, Tatarstan has rich deposits of brown and black coal, oil shale, zeolite, copper and bauxite

Water resources
  • 234 billion m³/year of total runoff
  • >8 thousand small lakes and ponds
  • 4 water reservoirs

Water resources of Tatarstan are the most important energy source, the resource ensuring operation of all sectors of the national economy, and the transport resource.

The major rivers are the Volga river (177 km in the territory of the Republic), and the Kama river (380 km), as well as two confluents of the Kama river: the Vyatka (60 km) and the Belaya rivers (50 km), having total runoff of 234 billion m³/year (97.5 % of the total runoff of all rivers). There are as well at least 500 small rivers in the territory of the Republic, not less than 10 km in length and numerous streams.

The biggest water objects in Tatarstan are 4 water reservoirs:

  • The Kuibyshevsky water reservoir, the world's second biggest (among river-borne ones) and the biggest in the Volga water reservoir. It provides seasonal storage of the mid-Volga.
  • The Nizhnekamsk water reservoir assures reallocation to hydropower installation.
  • The Zainsk water reservoir serves for technical maintenance of regional hydro-electric power plant.
  • The Karabash water reservoir serves for water supply of oil fields and industrial enterprises.

The Nizhnekamsk water power plant at the Kama river realizes water potential of the rivers producing nearly 1.8 bln kWh/year.

Subsurface resources of the Republic contain extensive deposits of subsurface water, from strongly mineralized to subsaline and fresh water. Mineral water possesses healing properties, being the base for numerous health care facilities.

Land resources

Tatarstan is located in broad-leaved and mixed wood zones, in steppe and forest-steppe zones. Agriculture and cattle breeding are actively developed in the steppe zones. Forests cover 1236.4 thousand hectares (17.5% of the territory).

Transport resources

Tatarstan is located in the very centre of the country, at the intersection of major trade routes connecting Europe and Asia. The republic is located at the intersection of key air routes, railway, motoring highways and strategic water routes of national importance. International transport corridors “West — East” and “North — South” cross the republic.

Choose Tatarstan today, and tomorrow you will enjoy the advantages of its logistic infrastructure. Thus, international transport corridor “Western Europe — Western China”, the new Silk Road will pass through Tatarstan, which will include a high-speed network; the first section of the network “Moscow — Kazan” will be put into operation in 2018.

Besides, the project of Sviyazhsk interregional multimodal logistic centre is in progress, it will become the biggest in the Volga region freight flow processing and redistribution centre. Advantageous location of the centre in the Kazan transport junction assures the shortest approach to the Volga region cities, and in future it may become the core of transport and logistics system of freight transportation in the Volga region.

The capital of the Republic — Kazan — is the major railway hub, the intersection of highways connecting European and Asian parts of the country.

Two International Airports and one airport for domestic flights provide an opportunity for 40 directions of passenger/cargo flights, including 19 cities of Russia, 6 CIS countries, 6 far-abroad countries, and more than 10 routine flights to Moscow.

6 federal highways intersect Tatarstan:
М-7 "Volga" Moscow — Vladimir — Nizhny Novgorod — Kazan — Ufa
Interstate М-5 “Ural” Moscow — Ryazan — Penza — Samara — Ufa — Chelyabinsk.
R175 "Kazan — Yoshkar-Ola".
R239 "Kazan — Orenburg".
R241 "Kazan — Buinsk — Ulyanovsk".
R242 (Perm — Yekaterinburg). It is part of the European route E 22 (Holyhead, UK — Ishim).
It intersects the UK, the Netherlands, Germany, Sweden, Latvia and Russia.

River routes help to reach the northern and southern seas of Russia. There are 3 river ports, 4 passenger ports and 6 river-boat stations in the Republic.

The intra-urban transport network is well developed in the cities and towns and is represented by buses, trams and trolleys. The Kazan subway stations linked the opposite parts of the city; construction of new stations is in progress. Regular transport communication is maintained in the republic between the cities, neighbour regions and airports. A taxi will bring you to practically any point of destination, it is represented by lights cars and trucks, from premium to economy class.
