Tatarstan hosts guests from all over the world – a meeting of United Cities and Local Governments’ in Kazan
More than 200 representatives from 97 world cities attended the meeting in an exhibition center «Kazan Fair» gathered to discuss issues of modern cities development and local authorities` work at the session of United Cities and Local Governments’ executive bureau. Tatarstan President Rustam Minnikhanov, Tatarstan State Council Chairman Farid Mukhametshin, the Mayor of Kazan and UCLG President for Eurasia Ilsur Metshin, representatives of Tatarstan Investment Development Agency, UCLG World Organisation Secretary General Josep Roig, co-president of UCLG and Mayor of Victoria Jacqueline Moustache-Belle, professor, economist and author of theory of creative class Richard Florida and others.
Mayors of European, Asian and African cities, executives of science institutes and business companies, leading economists, urbanists and transport engineers, and Jose Acebillo, Vukan Vuchic, Richard Florida and Mikhail Blinkin among them, gathered together at the opening ceremony in Kazan.
Mayor of Kazan Ilsur Metshin, highlighted that Tatarstan became the first Eurasian region, which hosts statutory event the World organization of UCLG, while opening the session. «An experience of each present person here is priceless and inimitable» — he said. «I hope that work will be resultative and recognizable».
Tatarstan President Rustam Minnikhanov, in his turn, noted that the organization «United Cities and Local Governments» became influential and widely known.
«Tatarstan becomes a platform for international and federal events execution more and more frequently» — commented Tatarstan Investment Development Agency Chief Executive Taliya Minullina. Session of the Group of Strategic Vision «Russia — the Islamic world» is held in the capital of Tatarstan these days, apart from UCLG. The International Economic Forum KazanSummit 2016 was held in Kazan literally last week. Tatarstan continues historically created mission of the West and the East integration. Despite of well-known economic difficulties and being politically motivated, we pay much attention to strengthening of international relations and create conditions for a dialog and cooperation".
The key meeting of the United Cities and Local Governments’ executive bureau takes place in Kazan from 25 to 28 of May. It is a unique organization of local authorities, affiliated with UN. It is the first time when the session of executive bureau is held in Russia.
A right to held the session was won by Kazan in Porto Alegre in 2015. City was supported by the UCLG President, Mayor of Istanbul Kadir Topbash and heads of regional departments.
UCLG is an international association of municipalities, unions, operated in large cities. The association began its work in 2994 and now unites more than 1000 city all over the world. Seven regional departments are included in UCLG. Headquarter of Eurasian department is situated in Kazan.
