Sberbank confirmed intentions to develop Islamic banking in Tatarstan

The president of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov held a meeting with the vice-president — the chairman of the Volga-Vyatka bank PJSC Sberbank Pyotr Koltypin with participation of the Head of Tatarstan Investment Development Agency Ms. Talia Minullina.

In his welcome speech Pyotr Koltypin noted dynamic rates of information technologies development of the republic and highly evaluated activity of the regional authorities. During the meeting the parties discussed the current practices, including the «Card of the Inhabitant of the Republic of Tatarstan» project, questions of a further cooperation in a number of directions and the prospects of Islamic banking in Russia.

It is worth reminding that in 2016 for the first time within the International economic summit of Russia and the countries of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation of «Kazansummit» in Tatarstan the business breakfast of Sberbank took place — a traditional attribute of the leading economic forums of Russia. The First Deputy Chairman of the board of Sberbank Maxim Poletayev who promised to arrive next year with German Gref for participation in «Kazansummit-2017» acted as «owner» of last action.

Ms. Talia Minullina noted that the cooperation with Sberbank promotes the solution of a number of strategic tasks aimed at development of Tatarstan including the field of Islamic finance. She said that Sberbank is ready to participate in a pilot project which assumes creation of special finance company in the sphere of Islamic finance in the form of the joint business providing the corresponding services to clients. Interest to the project from the Muslim people will determine a possibility of further start of standard services: opening of accounts, bank cards issue, different types of corporate and retail crediting. It is planned that the first transaction test on rules of Islamic banking might take place in September-October this year".
